Photography Observations - February

This month I intended to focus on macro photography. I love the concept and I think it provides a different sort of perspective on the world. While I did not get to practice nearly as much as I'd hoped to, I still had some fun experimenting.

The basic idea with macro photography is that you are taking pictures of very small things very close up. The look that I particularly enjoy is when you have a small subject in the foreground, in focus, with a larger subject in the background. I like the contrast.

I had a LOT of fun experimenting during our big ice storm.

Here, for instance: this is an icicle clinging to our mailbox. This icicle was about an inch long. I love the detail that you can see in the ice. I find it remarkable.

The ice storms here in North Carolina are like nothing I've experienced before. They strike very suddenly, and are gone almost as quick. Everything gets coated in ice. With this photo, I was trying to capture the blade of grass, encapsulated in ice. The water froze as it was trickling down.

What really helped was getting brave and experimenting with manual focus. (Up until now I've kept my camera set on auto focus, even with the other settings in manual mode.) It really helped me capture the up-close details like this piece of ice, which came off a leaf, whole.

Beyond that, I got some lovely photos of the incredible sunset following a tornado warning-day. (My first!) I wasn't practicing anything in particular shots, but it was such a gorgeous evening to capture!

And, naturally, lots of pictures of my kids. :)

Until next time!
